Zoos are no place for animals who are meant to roam free-no matter how "natural" they claim to be. It is becoming clearer just how damaging a captive environment is for elephants, as evidenced in the recent spate of elephant deaths at zoos across the U.S.
Captive elephants often suffer from degenerative joint problems, lameness, and chronic foot infections from standing for long periods on concrete or unnatural surfaces. Constant and wide-ranging movement over varied substrates such as hills, dirt, and grasses is essential for good health in elephants. In the wild, elephants can easily travel thirty miles a day. There is no zoo in the world that can provide that amount of space for these magnificent animals. Sending the elephants to a sanctuary and permanently closing the elephant exhibit is the best thing the [insert zoo's name] Zoo-or any zoo for that matter-can do to show the world it truly cares about animals.
