For 40 years Penny languished at the San Francisco Zoo with various health ailments before being euthanized on April 2, 1995. SFZS stated that Penny suffered from "a bad hip and neurological problems [which] forced veterinarians" to kill her. A necropsy report indicated that Penny had uterine cancer. Penny had lived with Tinkerbelle for more than 27 years.
